Ballroom, Latin and Sequence Dancing

Ballroom Dancing

These dances are characterized by smooth, flowing movements and dancers usually remain in a closed hold.

Typical ballroom dances include:

  • Waltz – graceful, flowing rise-and-fall motion in 3/4 time

  • Tango – dramatic, sharp movements with staccato steps

  • Viennese Waltz – faster rotating version of the waltz

  • Foxtrot – smooth, progressive dance with long walking steps

  • Quickstep – lively and energetic with hops and quick footwork

These are elegant, smooth, gliding around the floor dances.

Latin Dancing

Latin dances are generally more expressive, rhythmic, and energetic, with more open positions and hip action.

Main Latin dances include:

  • Cha-cha-cha – playful rhythm with the “cha-cha-cha” triple step

  • Samba – lively Brazilian-influenced dance with bounce action

  • Rumba – slow, romantic dance emphasizing hip motion

  • Paso Doble – dramatic dance inspired by Spanish bullfighting

  • Jive – fast, upbeat dance derived from swing

These are full of rhythm, hip movement, expression, and energy dances.

Sequence Dancing

Sequence dancing is a style of ballroom dancing where everyone on the dance floor performs the same fixed pattern of steps at the same time. Instead of improvising like in normal ballroom or Latin dancing, the steps are pre-choreographed and repeated in a sequence.

How Sequence Dancing Works

  • Each dance has a set routine (a sequence of figures).

  • Couples repeat the same pattern over and over.

  • Everyone moves in sync around the floor.

  • It’s often danced to specific music written for that sequence.

This makes it very social and beginner-friendly, because you don’t have to invent steps.

Popular Sequence Dances

Some well-known sequence dances include:

  • Mayfair Quickstep – a lively quickstep-style routine

  • Square Tango – tango danced in a square pattern

  • Rumba One – simple rumba sequence often used for beginners

  • Midnight Tango – dramatic tango-style routine
